We cap our Chiapas group trips at 12 people so you actually get to experience the local culture instead of being herded onto a massive charter bus. We hit our absolute favorite spots in southern Mexico, balance the heavy exploring with actual downtime, and make sure you leave with a solid crew of new friends.
We intentionally limit our Mayab Experiences to just 12 travelers. You get the vibe of traveling with friends rather than being crammed into a massive group fighting to hear the guide. It keeps things flexible and way less annoying.

Being the “trip friend” is fun—until you’re chasing RSVPs, comparing 22 Airbnbs and begging people to send their passport details. We built Mayab Experiences to keep the fun parts and handle the rest.
Your only job? Approve the plan and pack your bags.
“We were 16 people flying in from 5 different cities and I was dreading the planning. Mayab took our chaotic group chat and turned it into a trip our friends still talk about a year later.”

Thinking about a remote team retreat or a special celebration trip?
Our mission is straightforward: we run incredible group trips through Chiapas to bankroll our own non-profit that houses, feeds, and educates local indigenous youth.
We skip the generic sightseeing and curate authentic local adventures so you get an honest perspective of southern Mexico without feeling like a walking tourist cliché.
At the end of the day, your vacation dollars do double duty—you get the trip of a lifetime, and the Tzotzil communities right here in our backyard get the direct, tangible support they actually need.

If it’s not covered here, we’re one friendly message away.
Short answer: No. Since our guests fly in from all over the map, trying to bake airfare into the total trip cost is a logistical nightmare we aren't willing to touch.
You are responsible for booking your own flights.
If you need help figuring out the routing, our team can easily help coordinate the details. Once you shoot us your confirmed itinerary, we take over the ground logistics from there.
Make sure you fly into Tuxtla Gutiérrez International Airport [TGZ]. This is the closest functioning airport to our base in San Cristobal de las Casas. Please, for the love of everything holy, do NOT book a flight to San Cristóbal Airport [SCY]. That is an island in the Galapagos, and while the giant tortoises are cool, our tour guides are absolutely not driving to Ecuador to pick you up.
Short answer: Yes, as long as you have a shred of common sense. While the news loves to paint all of Mexico as a giant warzone, tourist hubs like San Cristobal de las Casas and Palenque are completely safe for visitors. Don't go looking for trouble, and trouble usually won't find you.
Probably not. If you hold a passport from a major Western country, Mexico lets you walk right in without a formal tourist visa for stays up to 180 days. You just need a valid passport and a standard tourist entry stamp.
Who Gets a Free Pass?
Mexico is pretty relaxed when it comes to tourism. If you are a citizen of the following areas, you do not need to apply for a visa before your Mayab Experiences tour:
United States and Canada
The United Kingdom
The Schengen Area (European Union)
Japan and Australia
Yes! That’s one of the best parts. Each traveler pays their own share securely via our payment link. No more chasing down money or fronting the entire bill on your card.
It happens. We’ll adjust your itinerary and pricing as needed up to a set deadline before the trip. We’ll walk you through timelines and flexible options when we start planning.
Getting through customs is a breeze as long as you have a valid passport, your tourist card, and proof that you are eventually leaving Mexico. As long as you aren't trying to move here permanently, the process is straightforward. Just have these documents ready at the Tuxtla Gutiérrez airport so you don't hold up the rest of the group.
Yes. In fact, solo travelers make up the bulk of our groups. You won't be the awkward odd one out because half the people on these trips usually show up without a plus-one.
Yes. We aren't running a middle school field trip where we count heads every five minutes, so you will have plenty of space to wander off. More than likely, you'll have plenty of time on the first day and the last to do tons of stuff. Also, throughout the week/weekend, you'll have multiple hours each day to relax and enjoy these places at your own pace. We build "choose your own adventure" moments into the schedule so you don't feel like a total tourist zombie.
Most of our guests land somewhere between their late 20s and mid-40s. But honestly, we care way more about your ability to handle a humid jungle hike than the year printed on your passport. If you can keep up and you're polite, you're are welcome to join.
Yes to both. We aren't going to hold a spot for you based on a pinky promise, so you need to drop a non-refundable deposit to lock it in. After that, we offer flexible payment plans so you can pay off your Chiapas adventure over time.
The short answer: the sooner you tell us, the better your odds of seeing that cash again, but your initial deposit is gone forever. BUT we absolutely will work with you in anyway we can! Example: If you booked an experience in November, but can't make it until December, we can just move your $500 deposit to cover for that trip if you let us know at least 60 days in advance. Keep in mind that this can only be done once!
Canceling 60+ Days Out
We get that plans change and life happens. Cancel more than 60 days before your start date to get a full refund. Just remember, we keep the non-refundable deposit for the hassle.
Canceling 30 to 59 Days Out
Cutting it this close means we have already started paying for your ground logistics. Cancel 30 to 59 days before departure and you get a 50% refund. Again, the deposit stays with us.
Canceling Under 30 Days Out
At this point, your spot is locked in and we can't magically replace you at the last minute. Cancellations made less than 30 days out are completely non-refundable. Buy travel insurance so you aren't left upset over lost money if an emergency pops up.
Other Mayab Experiences Services
Booking something else besides a standard group tour? We will send you the specific terms and conditions directly based on the actual service you are buying.
No. We run adventure tours in Chiapas, we aren't insurance brokers. You are 100% responsible for buying your own full-coverage travel insurance before you show up in Mexico. We do have people that we've worked with before that we can recommend!
Absolutely not. Do not gulp the tap water anywhere in Chiapas unless you want to spend your entire vacation aggressively hugging a bathroom floor. Stick strictly to bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
Pack for literally every season, because the weather down here has a complete split personality. You need warm layers for the freezing mountain mornings and highly breathable gear for the sweaty jungle afternoons. Leave the fancy clothes and high heels at home unless you want to snap an ankle on a colonial cobblestone.
